Purdue English Big Read

Alex and her colleague Ching-Jen Sun give a presentation at Purdue University’s Asian American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center.

From Fall 2022–Spring 2024, I served as the Assistant Director of the Purdue English Big Read. The Big Read is a community-wide program that distributes free copies of a shared text and organizes various events around that selection. Together, folks throughout the Greater Lafayette area—from Purdue as well as local high schools, libraries, and adult learning programs—connect over a common love of great stories. As Assistant Director, I have accomplished the following tasks:

  • Facilitated in-person and virtual events, such as movie and trivia nights
  • Hosted and produced four podcast episodes
  • Cultivated lesson plans and classroom activities
  • Led book clubs for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Taught two mini-courses at the Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association (WALLA)
  • Produced over 90 print and digital advertisements, including posters and bookmarks
  • Managed the Big Read social media accounts (@EnglishPurdue on Facebook; @purdue_english on Twitter and Instagram)
  • Supervised two undergraduate interns

Because of these experiences, I am skilled with visual design and audio production tools, including Canva, Visme, Lightroom, Photoshop, and Camtasia, among others.
